I have been working on some iPhwn (yeah, spell it that way) and iPod touch userland hacks, as well as an iphonelinux X Window port, dubbed as Zwindow. I also co-founded the ra1ndev team (who is known for nothing other than unfinished projects :)

Creating the Firmware
PwnageTool takes the IPSW file and patches it, creating a custom version. This enables a lot more features such as pre-installed packages, BootNeuter (iPhone software unlock), custom packages and boot logos. This method is usually less secure than the quick exploits such (redsn0w, QuickPwn, purplera1n, blackra1n, etc.).

How to create Custom Firmware Bundles
Following steps are needed:
#Copy an existing bundle as a template
#Decrypt IMG3 KBAGs and put the keys into Info.plist - usually using an AES payload
#Use GenPass with decrypted ramdisk to get the rootfs vfdecrypt key, put the key and rootfs volume name into Info.plist
#Unpack NOR files, ramdisk and kernelcache using AES Keys, apply patches (for minor upgrades, you can apply byte pattern-based patches from previous version, so you don't have to use IDA for every file)
#Patch ASR from the Restore Ramdisk, use codesign or ldid to fix up its code page hashes.
#Use bsdiff to create diffs by diffing unpacked original versus patched files. iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS utilize a different bootrom exploit, so the encrypted LLB for these devices need patching, using the xpwntool option "-x24k" (for iPod touch 2G) or "-xn8824k" (for iPhone 3GS) to patch the file.

(from here: question and answer)

Problems
This method does have negative aspects. The most common errors are the 1600 errors, a group of errors saying that the either the firmware file is corrupt or you didn't put it in the right mode (recovery, DFU Mode). Sometimes the problems could just be a computer problem such as the memory is full or the USB port is broken. The most common computer error is a 1604 error which means that the firmware file is corrupt.

Windows
PwnageTool is expected to remain exclusive to Mac OS X. As of October 2009, iH8sn0w, et. al. has announced that they made a project that will bring PwnageTool's functionality to Windows, called sn0wbreeze.

License
PwnageTool is freeware.

Cydia/Saurik Server is a server that was created by Saurik. It stores SHSH blobs for devices that use Cydia's "on-file" feature. For more details see SHSH and TinyUmbrella.

Usage
To use the server to restore to a firmware no longer being signed by Apple (e.g. 4.0.1), you must first jailbreak and use Cydia's "Make your life easier" option. Then add the following line to /etc/hosts (Mac OS X/Linux via posixninja's idevicerestore) or C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows XP+):

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Note: On windows, make sure you open hosts as administrator.
Then go along with the restore process. If the restore fails after "Verifying iPhone restore with Apple", you have not set up correctly.

How it works
Basically, it uses the hosts file to redirect the Apple firmware server to saurik's. His server has a ECID SHSH database, just like apple's. When an older firmware request is sent to apple, it will deny the SHSH request and error out. When it's requested at saurik's, if you've saved it, it finds the SHSH and continues with the restore.

Palz: /* S5L8930, used in the iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4G */

Introduction / old+new
The bootrom (called "SecureROM" by Apple) is the first significant code that runs on an iDevice. The bootrom is unwritable. Finding exploits in the bootrom level is a big achievement since Apple won't be able to fix it without a hardware revision.

Often users refer to old bootrom or new bootrom devices. The new bootrom devices were released after 9 September 2009 and have the 0x24000 Segment Overflow fixed. Therefore these newer versions of the iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS are not vulnerable to this exploit and had only a tethered jailbreak/unlock until Spirit came out. Currently, these devices can be jailbroken on iOS 4.1 with greenpois0n along with every device available.

Please see also Apple's stage 2 bootloader, which also uses the "iBoot" name.

Check bootrom version
To find out if you have an old or new bootrom, the easiest way is to look at the serial number. If the 4th and 5th digits are lower than 40, then you probably have an old bootrom. If they are higher than 45, then you probably have a new bootrom. These two digits show the production week. For refurbished phones and for numbers inbetween, the result is undefined and you have to make the following exact check.

To check your device's bootrom version, you must put your device into DFU Mode. Make sure it is not in Recovery Mode, as Recovery Mode does not mention the bootrom version. If you have Mac OS X, go to System Profiler, and under the "Hardware" category, go to USB, and click on "Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)." If you have Windows, go to Device Manager, find USB controller, subitem Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. In Properties, Details, select Device Instance Path in the dropdown. The end of the info string will show the bootrom version.

If you're on Linux and have a Desktop Environment setup, install gnome-device-manager and start it. Connect you're device in DFU Mode, search in the left tree-view for "USB Device" and look at Summary -> Model until it says "Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)". If it does go to Properties (next to Summary) and search for "usb_device.serial". The end of the String will show you the bootrom version.

:Tethered. This just allows unsigned code execution to be performed regardless of SHSH or model revision at the DFU/bootrom level. This is useful for redsn0w or blackra1n type hacks as they provide a quick and unclosable exploit to perform the actual jailbreak. Functionally, this replaces the need for sending 2.1.1 iBSS + iBEC to use Arm7Go or the 3.1.2 iBSS/iBEC (if that can even be done?) for that other USB control msg exploit in 3.1.2 iBoot.
:I don't completely understand your question, but no, this exploit will work on nothing other than the 2nd generation iPod touch (and is not particularly big news, since we can already run unsigned code on the second gen touch). AriX 18:01, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Pod2g : I released this one because it's old devices only (Apple engineers already found and fixed it).
The good thing about it, is that it's a way to execute unsigned assembly code easily in the context of the bootrom.
Researchers can use it to explore the bootrom, try things, etc. Also, maybe it could be useful for iDroid ?

palz2015 : So could it be untethered using the exploit to run code that patches the kernel, and preform a userland-only jailbreak, just from DFU?

no because the exploit will replace the rdisk with a pwnd one ( that will fail the check ) and cydia will need to know how to use the exploit but you can re inject apple's rdisk --liamchat 18:55, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
: What are you talking about? Filesystem modification causes no problems, dropping in a dylib, adding a daemon for a userland jailbreak and changing FStab is a fully functional jailbreak. Also cydia does not have knowledge of how to use any exploit... Iemit737 21:19, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
But really, you could execute an unsigned ramdisk, have it patch the kernel at boot (so no recovery mode), and userland jailbreak. Untethered? --Palz 21:41, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
:Where would this ramdisk come from that patches the kernel at boot?? Ramdisks only come from Recovery/DFU mode which is what SHAtter is all about. But if this ramdisk's purpose is just to drop in a dynamic library / binary you can convince iOS to execute that uses another userland exploit in some framework, then you would have an untethered jailbreak. Iemit737 21:46, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
:You could do that. So long as you have an exploit (like this) and a payload, you can exploit, upload payload and then upload a pwned iBSS. Then, once in a pwned environment you can easily boot a pwned ramdisk with a userland jailbreak on it - no problem :) blackthund3r 06:14, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Explanation
So, I'm sure most, if not all, of you are confused. This Limera1n is nothing more than a plot by geohot to get the chronic dev team to incorporate the exploit used in limera1n into greenpois0n. This is not plausible because the exploit in limera1n is a bootrom level exploit, which can be used to make a jailbreak (albeit tethered) on its own. To make greenpois0n untethered, chronic dev has used a tweak by comex (in userland) to patch the kernel. The exploit in Limera1n can be used at a later date to make another untethered jailbreak, but it's better to leave the lower level exploits until later, after all, either way, it produces the same affect. To implement the limera1n exploit into greenpois0n, they'd have to rewrite the entire jailbreak, which would offset the release. This should clear up confusion. ~Drake

I reckon it was the iphone dev teams fault if they just had to release spirit after the iphone 4 was released there would be no drama because the ipod touch 4 would hav been jailbroken via star. --robinhood

Theoretically, one might be able to restore to a custom firmware by jumping to a pwned iBSS or iBEC through the limera1n exploit and using that to trick the device into accepting the firmware, but I'm probably mistaken. --dra1nerdrake 19:28, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

--robinhood

I think Geohot told someone about his exploit and apple attempted to patch it in a4 bootrom --liamchat 01:54, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
UPDATE:
A recent tweet from iPhone hacker p0sixninja has just confirmed that the date WILL NOT be changed. If they can implement geohot's exploit before 10/10, they will use that. If they can't they won't. --dra1nerdrake 00:53, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
: This has nothing to-do with Limera1n. -- Shorty 01:06, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
::It does. If they can integrate it into GP then there's not going to be a Limera1n. If they can't in time then there will be two jailbreaks released... --OMEGA RAZER 01:11, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
::: This is a grand waste of a bootrom exploit though. ~Drake
:::: Geohot will not waste the exploit's used in limera1n but greenpois0n is using a bootrom exploit to inject a userland exploit that is odd --liamchat 01:20, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
:::::Yes it does limera1n will use an untetherd bootrom and iboot exploit but Why does Geohot not want us to use comex's kernel patch just for 4.1 then when 4.2 is out we can use shatter to reuse the iboot exploit --liamchat 01:20, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

--robinhood
The iPhone's baseband processor is the S-Gold 2. The iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS make use of the X-Gold 608 chip for this purpose. The iPhone 4 uses the XMM 6180.
It is definitely worthy to note that the Pwnage exploit is fixed because the images are now flashed to the NOR in their encrypted IMG3 containers, and the bootrom can properly check LLB's signature. That being said, unsigned images can still be run using the 0x24000 Segment Overflow, provided the bootrom is old enough.
Researchers can use it to explore the bootrom, try things, etc. Also, maybe it could be useful for iDroid ?
palz2015 : So could it be untethered using the exploit to run code that patches the kernel, and preform a userland-only jailbreak, just from DFU?
