What is it?

* DFU, or device failsafe utility, is a little back door into your iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s used to downgrade your iPod/iPhone and also to upgrade to the new “pwned” 2.0 ipsws.

Well, how do I get it in here already?

* Step 1: Turn your iPhone or iPod Touch ON.
* Step 2: Connect the device to your computer. Wait for iTunes to open, and keep it open.
* Step 3: Make sure your screen is on. (Power on, slide to unlock, etc.)
* Step 4: HOLD THE POWER (TOP BUTTON) AND HOME BUTTON UNTIL THE SCREEN FLICKERS OFF. THIS IS CRUCIAL.
* Step 5: After the screen goes off, keep holding them for another two seconds.
* Step 6: RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON, BUT KEEP HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON. Although it may seem like nothing’s happening, don’t release that home button. You could seriously screw up your device at this stage.
* Step 7: If you are using Windows XP, a nice little callout will pop out, saying that it is installing drivers for DFU mode and iBoot, etc.
* Step 8: iTunes should pop up on your computer, saying something along the lines of “iTunes has detected a device in recovery mode, etc.”

Steps for downgrading:

* Download the 1.1.1 firmware for the iPod Touch here, and the iPhone here.
* In iTunes, go to the iPod tab.
* If you are on a mac, hold option and then click restore. If you are on a PC, hold shift and hit restore.
* Browse to wherever you saved the restore image, then select it.
* Your iPod/iPhone should downgrade back to 1.1.1.

Steps for upgrading to jailbroken 2.0:

* Use the custom 2.0 ipsw that you generated through the pwnage tool, or use ours here (iPod Touch only at the moment).
* In iTunes, go to the iPod/iPhone tab.
* If you are on a mac, hold option and then click restore. If you are on a PC, hold shift and hit restore.
* Browse to wherever you saved the restore image, then select it.
* Your iPod/iPhone should upgrade to 2.0. Don’t worry if it takes a long time; this is normal.
