The '''bootrom''' (called "SecureROM" by Apple) is the first significant code that runs on an iDevice. The bootrom is read-only. Finding exploits in the bootrom level is a big achievement since Apple won't be able to fix it without a hardware revision.

Certain models, including the [[N72ap|iPod touch 2G]] and [[N88ap|iPhone 3GS]], have different bootrom versions. These are most commonly referred to with the terms "old bootrom" and "new bootrom." These "new bootrom" devices were released after [[Timeline#September|9 September 2009]] and have the [[0x24000 Segment Overflow]] fixed. While the new bootrom revisions have an exploit, the exploit needs the assistance of a firmware-based exploit to achieve an [[untethered jailbreak]].

An untethered jailbreak is a type of [[jailbreak]] where your device does not require you to reboot with a connection to an external device capable of executing commands on the device.

== Device support ==
Many device/firmware combinations can use an untethered jailbreak.

Devices as new as the [[N81ap|iPod touch 4G]]/[[K66ap|Apple TV 2G]] have known [[bootrom]] exploits. However, the [[N88ap|iPhone 3GS]] ([[Bootrom 359.3|old bootrom]]) and older have bootrom exploits that allow for an untethered jailbreak. Newer devices as old as the [[N88ap|iPhone 3GS]] ([[Bootrom 359.3.2|new bootrom]]), [[N72ap|iPod touch 2G]] ([[Bootrom 240.5.1|new bootrom]]), and [[N18ap|iPod touch 3G]] have bootrom exploits that are limited to a [[tethered jailbreak]] (without the assistance of a firmware-based exploit).

==Different Types==
There are 2 types of untethered jailbreaks: Patched [[LLB]]-based and kernel hacks. On the first sort, that requires an untethered bootrom dump (e.g. [[24kpwn]] or [[Pwnage 2.0]]), it is permanent and unpatchable, except for an hardware update. This type of jailbreak patches the LLB to not check the firmware at boot-up , letting a pwned kernel or a custom bootlogo to be uploaded to the system. The second type, uploads the unpwned kernel, the system checks the signature, then a kernel exploit happens and the kernel is being patched and changed to fit jailbreak. After the exploit, the bootlogo can be changed. A userland exploit was used before the kernel exploit to get bypassed the iBoot signature checks before the kernel exploit. up to iOS 4.3.3, [[Incomplete Codesign Exploit]] was used. in iOS 4.3.4, it was patched. in 5.0.1 [[Racoon String Format Overflow Exploit]] is used instead. The kernel exploits found so far: [[BPF_STX Kernel Write Exploit]] (works up to iOS 3.2), [[iOSurface Kernel Exploit]] (works up to iOS 4.0.1, excluding 3.2.2), [[Packet Filter Kernel Exploit]] (Works up to iOS 4.2 beta 3), [[HFS Legacy Volume Name Stack Buffer Overflow]] (vulnerability in HFS, works up to iOS 4.2.8), [[ndrv_setspec() Integer Overflow]] (Works up to iOS 4.3.3) and [[HFS Heap Overflow]] (Works up to iOS 5.0.1)

[[Star]] and [[saffron]] run on the device itself, and are completely independent of a computer's operating system. JailbreakMe has supported so far 1.0-1.1.1,3.1.2-4.0.1(no 3.2.2) and 4.3-4.3.3. Each device can be jailbroken on those firmwares, No matter what, but if [[SHSH]] blobs aren't given for a certain firmware, it is not restorable.

And for the new pictures for the stub pages, you probably just copied them from somewhere on the Internet. Please draw your own images instead of stealing it from somewhere. I'll delete them otherwise. We cannot have the official Apple logo just as a mark for general Apple issues. We might be able to use official product photos or the Apple logo on a page describing Apple, but nothing else. Treat images the same way as software. The jailbreak image probably comes from a scammers page, but it's still not yours, even if they do bad things. [[User:geohot|Geohot]] has enough trouble right now, so don't add copyrighted material to this wiki. I'll delete the images tomorrow if you haven't replaced them by then. * Chronic Dev and you (planetbeing) worked on [[0x24000 Segment Overflow|0x24000 hack]]. MuscleNerd found that the vulnerability existed, but did nothing implementation wise. We had it all ready and implemented, and while he is awesome for being able to find it, it kind of does not make sense to put his nae in the credits. To be fair, since he did find the CERT thing, although it is kind of generic it is probably worth splitting into a separate page for the implementation versus the exploit itself.
* This also works the other way around. I discovered arm7_go independently, but removed my credit because MuscleNerd and the rest of you guys packaged it up into a working jailbreak. Did you notice that?
* The whole hash thing is annoying. It was good for NitroKey's leak, I'll admit, but here is an example I really don't like. We went through the bootrom with geohot, found the exploit, and had him test it out to be sure it still existed and didn't have a fix hidden in some bdev routine. It did not, and the exploit still worked. Then, two hours later, for some reason dev decided to completely ignore the fact that geohot actually verified it, and instead posted their analysis of bootrom as if they hadn't seen geohots post (oh, and there was a hash of it the analysis!). We don't use hashes, but we technically knew before you that it worked and was still there, we just thought it would actually be better to verify that it worked. Sure, we could assume that you all just didn't see geohotz post at all, but then again what would have made you want to hash the notes? I guess I could not count that point though, as that would imply that I would need to assume that you expected him to post first or something.
* I understand that I definitely should have posted something on this page regarding this matter first, and I take full responsibility, but just because somebody has op in #iphone, totally unrelated to The iPhone Wiki or anything that I have said in the room or any rules I have broken in there, does it mean that they should be able to still ban me?

Maybe you should clarify that. This kind of infos are mostly not directly related to hacking, but more on repair etc., but could potentially also be useful for hackers. If yes, this is desired, then could you propose a structure for these pages? One page for every device (dividing it if too big) or one page for each type of instruction (dividing it by device if necessary)?

:Re the theme, geohot can go to the skins folder, copy Vector.php -> iPhone.php and rename the class names to say iPhone instead of Vector (but not the css files), then move [[MediaWiki:Vector.css]] -> [[MediaWiki:Iphone.css]] and in LocalSettings.php, <tt>$wgDefaultSkin="iphone";</tt>. Then there will be an option to go back to regular Vector.

The new icon looks fantastic! I just have a minor issue with the new theme: the grey pinstripe background reduces readability of the text by some degree, with decreased contrast and the pattern of the pinstripes. Can I nominate the lighter grey color and more subtle pinstriping of tables (like "Contents" boxes) as the main text background color? I guess then the Contents boxes would be the same color, or even lighter, and that seems OK too.
