Bricking / Looping Page
Hi Arc. I've just rolled back your latest addition to the bricked article. While it is completely true what you said there, this is not relevant to the article and perhaps also not to this wiki. The bricked article is about real bricking, meaning no way back - throw away the device (or in case of the baseband, just making an iPod touch out of the iPhone). You were writing about some software which causes reboot loops and such, but a firmware restore fixes this, so it's not a bricking. I think it's also not a good idea to even mention these pirate repos. I hope you understand. Feel free to discuss on the bricking talk page in case you disagree with this. --http 07:19, 4 March 2012 (MST)
:Thanks for the notice, I will take more care next time with my addition of information, and i also wont mention the pirate repos. Thanks for the heads up. Uhm, is there a possibility of me creating a page on Boot and Respring Looping? Thanks, kinda new.
::Anybody can create new articles. We haven't written down the rules for new articles, but as long as they have a lot of technical content, it's no problem at all. If you want to write about what to install and such things, then it's probably more end-user oriented and doesn't belong into this wiki. We already have a lot of such pages here, for example all the directory pages. We will delete those non-relevant directory pages and summarize their content on one page. Only those with useful infos will remain. Also nobody-hacker-groups-pages and such stuff will be removed right away. A lot of discussions were going on about new pages for some useless tools that nobody way using. Geohot decided that they may remain if these tools are being used by at least 1000 people. If you have anything important to write, then go ahead. If you're not so sure, please ask (with more details) on :The_iPhone_Wiki_talk:Community_portal. --http 13:58, 4 March 2012 (MST)

The term "bricked" refers to nonfunctional device states. Though nominally meaning that the device is permanently damaged, in practice it includes conditions which range from trivially recoverable (a failed update) to completely unrecoverable (in certain cases involving damaged baseband memory). A phone may be referred to as "bricked" if it will not boot, will not respond to input, will not make calls, etc. Early unlock solutions frequently resulted in partially-bricked phones after firmware updates were applied. Generally speaking, the iPhone is quite difficult to brick permanently via software, and in almost all cases the damage can be reversed.

Irreversible Software Bricking
The only way to irreversibly brick your iDevice in software is to flash an invalid baseband bootloader, provided it has a baseband. All other bad flash scenarios are recoverable some way or another. It is impossible to brick your device simply by jailbreaking it, since DFU Mode will still be available to recover from a bad flash.

If you purposefully erase / zero out your NOR, then you will even have trouble doing a DFU restore because important information from the SysCfg section will not be available.

Software Bricking with wrong version
Another recent way to brick the baseband is by installing baseband 06.15.00 on an incompatible device. redsn0w has an option to install this baseband on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS in order to get a baseband version that is unlockable with ultrasn0w. This is a nice way to get an unlock, because the iPad, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS all share the same Baseband Device, but the iPad has a newer version number in its baseband. That way people can actually downgrade by installing a higher version (there are no APTicket checks in these devices). This has known side-effects, like losing GPS functionality (this baseband comes from an iPad which has GPS not or differently implemented).

Now bricking a iPhone 3GS baseband is possible with this method. In fall 2011 Apple replaced the NOR flash. It is not clear if this was done intentionally to prevent this method. Previous type was 36my1ee and they changed it to 36my1eh, 36my1eg. (Please note that there was no switch to Toshiba baseband devices as some sources on the Internet still tell.) These new NOR flash chips seem to work with the newer baseband versions in the iPhone 3GS, but are not supported with the old 06.15.00 baseband. Therefore installing this version will brick your device if you have a new NOR flash, as you (currently) cannot go back and install anything else. To check before installation, check the version number, as it reveals the production year/week in the digits 3...5. Week 34/2011 appears safe so far, 35 seems iffy, 36 seems iffy, 37 is not safe. Or open the device and check the chip type.

Bricking with MobileSubstrate addition
Some Cydia source's may have "infected" tweaks, software and extensions. What they do is pose to be a Tweak or Extension for your device. They install like a normal Mod via MobileSubstrate but enable either a Boot Loop or Respring Loop. Your device is stuck in an endless loop. The only things you can do to prevent this is not to use SInfuliPhoneRepo or Illegal Repo's. Use them at your own risk. One of the latest tweaks that do this is "Spire for iPad/iPad2" Do not download as it WILL brick your iDevice.

This can also happen with Tweaks that are manually installed that aren't meant for you iDevice's Software version or hardware type, but that is highly unlikely. The only thing you can do is restore your iDevice to factory settings.

lowercase
The iPad 2 was announced on March 2, 2011. It was initially released on March 11 in the United States, and March 25 elsewhere. There are three variants of the iPad 2:
* Wi-Fi only (iPad2,1)
* GSM model (iPad2,2)
* CDMA model (iPad2,3)

Application processor
It makes use of the dual-core 1 GHz S5L8940 CPU (A5 chip).

Baseband (3G versions)
The GSM model uses the X-Gold 618 baseband chip, same as in the iPhone 4 GSM model.

The CDMA model uses Qualcomm's Gobi chipset, like the iPhone 4 CDMA model.

Wireless
The iPad 2 uses the BCM4329 for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communication.

Specifications
* Screen: 9.7" 1024x768 LED-backlit IPS display at 132 ppi
* Size: 9.5 inches (241.2 mm) (height) x 7.31 inches (185.7 mm) (width) x 0.34 inch (8.8 mm) (depth)
* Weight: 1.33 pounds (601 g) Wi-Fi model; 1.35 pounds (613 g) GSM model; 1.34 pounds (607 g) CDMA model
* Battery: Up to 10 hours of Internet use, one month of standby
* 3G: UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) GSM model; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz) CDMA model
* Rear camera: 0.7MP, supporting HD video recording @ 30 FPS
* Front camera: VGA photos and video @ 30 FPS, supporting FaceTime video calls

Jailbreak
As of July 6, 2011, all variants of the iPad 2 running iOS 4.3.3 have been successfully jailbroken by comex, using JailbreakMe 3.0 Saffron which is a userland jailbreak. This was patched in iOS 4.3.4 as released by Apple 10 days after the release of Saffron.

As of January 20, 2012, all variants of the iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 have been successfully jailbroken, using Absinthe which is a userland jailbreak using a modified version of the Corona exploit used in other iOS 5 jailbreaks.

iDevice Software / Boot Bricks

In my study Software bricks, e.g Updating the iOS or Restoring, and Boot,e.g iBoot, iBEC etc;
If the iBEC is broken it wont go into Restore Mode, Even via DFU but using an aid like iREC
and Steak4source its possible to get it booting into WTF then DFU then Restore Mode.
This is a little thing i had found out. This is only for A-4 Devices and maybe under.

If restoring software / updating and your computer shuts down or cord disconnects from the pc
whilst updating, this can have dramatic effects on the iBEC to the Software Installation
depending on the stage its up to. The variability of having a broken iBEC can be useful
if knowing how to use it.

I will continue on this later.

Please discuss

So, all of this sounds intimidating. Jailbreak, sign, secpack, unlock, baseband, iBoot, seczone, JailbreakMe, pwnage.

Don't worry, this should bring you up to speed.

* Activate - to bypass the required iTunes signup.
* Jailbreak - to allow full write and execute privileges on the iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad and iPad2.
* Unlock - to allow the use of any mobile phone carrier's SIM.

Think of iPhone as a little computer, even though Apple doesn't want you to. It has a processor, RAM, a "hard drive", an operating system, and a cellular modem on the serial port.

If you want to get started, first you should listen to the 25C3 presentation "Hacking the iPhone". This was in 2008, but it explains the basics in detail. You should also learn assembler for ARM processors.

Now
* Read the timeline
* Read the unsolved problems page to see where you can help.
* Read the how to reverse page when you realize most of those tasks require reversing and you have no idea how.

There are two ways to irreversibly brick your iDevice in software is to flash an invalid baseband bootloader, provided it has a baseband.

Another way is using software called Black0ut, It's still in development put should be released to the public soon. The software goes for a custom firmware approach with the aid of the limera1n exploit, so if you have an A-5 device it may become a more lengthy process but not impossible. The software developed by The Br3ak-T33m, Exploits by some of there members,Limera1n exploit and Custom IPSW package pod2g and geohot.
